QR code print size calculator

There is no universal minimum size. Use this conservative estimate as a starting point, then prove the exact artwork on the exact material and at the real scanning distance.

Uses a 10:1 distance-to-code rule of thumb, a 25 mm floor for hand-held print, and extra room for dense data or a logo. It is a test target, not a guarantee.

Why physical size alone cannot predict a scan

A QR symbol is made of square modules. A short URL may fit into a relatively low-version symbol with large modules. A long URL, full contact card or event record may need many more modules. If both are printed at the same outside width, every module in the denser symbol is smaller and harder for a camera to separate.

Error-correction level, a central logo, printer resolution, ink spread, surface curvature, glare, camera focus and movement all change the result. Any calculator that promises a guaranteed size without seeing the final data and production material is oversimplifying the job.

Use the estimate correctly

The familiar 10:1 rule says the code width should be about one tenth of the expected scanning distance. A code scanned from 30 cm therefore starts around 3 cm wide; a sign scanned from 2 metres starts around 20 cm. This is a practical planning heuristic, not part of the QR specification. Our calculator also applies a 2.5 cm floor and adds a safety factor for dense or branded designs.

Do not shrink a code simply because one new flagship phone reads it in ideal light. The audience may use older cameras, protective lenses or accessibility settings. Design for a quick first scan rather than the smallest technically possible mark.

Preserve the quiet zone

The quiet zone is blank space around all four sides of the symbol. It helps the reader locate the QR boundary. DENSO WAVE describes a four-module margin for a standard QR Code. The margin belongs to the code, so do not count it as spare space for a border, label or background illustration.

When a design application crops tightly to the dark modules, add the quiet zone back before export. If the code sits on a photograph, place it on a solid light panel that extends through the entire quiet zone.

Choose a file format that survives production

SVG is safest for professional layout because it can be resized without blurring module edges. PNG works when exported at enough pixels for the final dimensions and placed at 100% or smaller. JPEG is a poor source format for QR artwork because lossy compression creates halos and soft edges.

For desktop printing, 300 pixels per inch is a useful production target. A 3 cm code at 300 ppi is roughly 354 pixels wide. Large-format printers are often viewed from farther away and may use different effective resolutions, so ask the print provider for its artwork specification rather than enlarging a small screenshot.

Material-specific risks

  • Glossy lamination and glass: overhead lights can wash out part of the symbol. Test at several angles.
  • Curved bottles and cups: curvature distorts modules. Enlarge the code and keep it away from sharp bends.
  • Fabric: weave and folds break straight edges. Use a larger code and avoid seams.
  • Thermal receipts: fading and horizontal streaks can remove data. Keep a readable fallback.
  • Outdoor signs: distance, rain, dirt and sun exposure all require more margin than an indoor proof.

Run a production preflight

  1. Generate the final payload and remove unnecessary URL parameters.
  2. Use a dark foreground, light solid background and intact quiet zone.
  3. Export the final SVG or correctly sized PNG; never use a screenshot.
  4. Print one proof on the intended stock, finish and printer.
  5. Scan on at least one iPhone and one Android phone from the intended distance.
  6. Repeat in bright, dim and angled light. Test behind any final laminate or glass.
  7. Verify the destination and action, not merely that the camera detects a code.
  8. If detection is slow, enlarge or simplify the code before ordering the full run.

When a readable fallback is essential

Important instructions, payments, tickets and emergency information should never depend on a QR code alone. Add a short typed URL, phone number, desk location or human-readable identifier. The fallback helps users who cannot scan, users who do not trust a hidden destination, and staff diagnosing a damaged code.
